Whether you want to impress clients, attract colleagues to your idea, or navigate a difficult conversation - your voice is the key to success in meetings. And one of the most vital elements of our vocal toolbox is RESONANCE.

This is one of my favourite voice skills to work on with my 1:1 clients, because it's something they've usually not explored before and it gets such fast & effective results for them!

So I wanted to share this today to help you engage your clients / colleagues in meetings & create the impact you deserve.

So how can we use different vocal resonances to create different effects?

Using more chest resonance in your voice can create a calming, reasonable tone that can be very useful in moments of tension. Whether you're negotiating with clients, delivering bad news, or chairing a heated debate!

It's also very grounding, so can be great for those difficult (but very important!) conversations where you need to stand up for yourself (politely!):

"I'd like a pay rise"

"I deserve to be treated better"

"Please don't speak over me"

"I hadn't finished speaking yet. To continue my point..."

It can also be great if you're looking to sound more assertive or authoritative.

On the other hand, using a spoonful of nasal resonance can be great for cutting through chatter in a busy meeting room or raised voices in a fiery discussion! It instantly commands attention and therefore can reduce the need for shouting loudly over noise (and any consequential vocal damage!).

Nasal resonance is also really useful for sounding fun and energised. It's brightness can really give your meeting a lift and encourage people to wake up and listen - so if you're feeling like you've been in the meeting a long time and people are starting to drift, a cheery bit of vocal resonance can help get them back in the room & focused.

And as with everything I do, VARIETY is the word! If you've been focusing on using chest resonance for an entire presentation, it's possible people will start to get so calm they're relaxing into a daydream. But equally, if you've been using a brash, nasal resonance the whole time, people may have found it a bit intense being on the bright, energised level the whole time & become numb to it.

So try to shake it up - get comfortable with how each type of resonance feels in your body and then look for opportunities to use both!

NB - with both chest and nasal resonance, you may not want to go full throttle on either - I work with clients on finding somewhere on each scale that works best for them in their unique voice.

Try it out and get in touch - I'd love to know how you get on 🙌🏻
